New Wave of Chinese Contemporary Art: Identity, Irreverence, and Forward-looking was held in Avent Studio on May 14, 2015 (Thursday) from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. This event was part of NYCxDesign 2015 and it aimed to discuss the unique characters and similarities of the new generation artists born after 1980s through a panel discussion and a workshop “lemon finger”. During the creation of this event, Avent Studio founders He Wei and Hu Naishu raised the concept “Sour Generation”, a self-mockery and monologue of new generation artists.

NYCXDESIGN official introduction

Panel |

The panel “Sour Generation” was hosted by the founder of MusicDish, Eric De Fontenay. Panel guests included Avent Studio founder and artist He Wei, product designer Zhou Yi, and artist Stone whose works involve art, design and music. This four “new generation” artists who worked across the boundary of art and design, put aside the differences on age, sex and nationality, discussed the huge impact of western contemporary art to the just reformed China in the 1980s and the following development of Chinese contemporary art: bitter, but cheerfully inspiring. The new generation born after 1980s just steps into the world of art and design now. They grew up with the patriotic song “I Love Beijing Tiananmen Square”, surrounded by the expectation of their parents as only child and the attention and criticism from the society, and went through the huge impact of globalization and the Internet wave. They struggled in the chaos of revolutions and looked for their own identities and ways to the adulthood. The generation in the new wave is neither bitter, nor sweet. They are sour, independent and unique.

Workshop + Reception |

Avent Studio

Avent Studio explored the new experience of the opening reception. The reception this time added the workshop as an experimental breakthrough. Within two hours, the artists became teachers while participants became students. The hands-on interaction actually provided artists and viewers an interesting approach to communicate with each other, and allowed artists to convey their opinions and attitudes more effectively.

The first workshop, instructed by product designer Zhou Yi, was to teach participants to mold their own fingers. During the workshop, some participants chose the index finger used to point things; some chose the ring finger; most of them chose the middle finger. The final products recorded the different finger shapes of every participant and responded to the “body memory” concept by Zhou Yi.

Section II |

After the “finger molding” workshop by guest designer Zhou Yi, Avent Studio expanded the concept of “finger” and designed the “lemon finger workshop” for the “Sour Generation” concept and recorded the finger movement in an abstract way.

First of all, the instructor Hu Naishu cut the lemon for every participant. A tinge of fresh lemon was spread across the room.

After that, participants were guided to squeeze lemons in their own ways. Some people squeezed it heavily and some lightly. The fresh smell of sour lemons was all over the place immediately.

Participants continued the action of squeezing lemons and applied it on the prepared clay to create textures. Then, they brushed the lemon juice on the clay.

The studio provided participants with prepared PH papers. They pressed the paper on the lemon-covered clay, and the textures created by them were revealed on the paper as an abstract painting.

In this workshop, Avent Studio used the conceptual approach to transform viewers into artists and allowed them to make their own art works using food as a medium. By recording the marks of their own finger movements in an abstract way, it expanded the concept of “body memory”.

After the workshop, SinoVision English channel and The China Press both reported this event.

ADVERTISMENT

The Sour Generation describes the young Chinese artists today that are not bitter like the prior generation nor sweet but quite sour. The night will therefore feature drinks (yes, spiked) and food served during the Workshop around the concept.

While many may identify Chinese contemporary art with the post-cultural revolution of the 80s or “cynical realism” of the 90s, a new generation of Chinese artists and designers has emerged to elevate the form to the next level. Unlike their predecessors, this new wave of creators is a globalized, post-internet generation seeking to find China’s identity in the 21st century and its place in the broader world, often through humour, flirtation with taboos and an irreverent view of the world and issues surrounding them. Their works look forward, not back; are light and neon, not dark and rebellious; and imbued with a confidence of being able to shape an ever-changing society.

The panel will feature artists from Beijing where Zhou Yi is redefining the relationship between people and their bodies, to He Wei who fuses food into a new artistic expression and ex-MTV VJ Stone (Schutze) Shi who incorporates world currencies in his artwork to gain a deeper understanding of Chinese society. The panel will not only illuminate the audience on the new trends influencing today’s contemporary art, but will also put a spotlight on the very different paths and experiences that has led to each ones creations. The panel will be hosted and moderated by Eric de Fontenay, founder of MusicDish*China and advocate of “Yaogun Wenhua” (Chinese rock culture).

Avent Studio, LittleE Studio and MusicDish*China will present a unique event assembling Chinese creators who have chosen very different paths, and yet share a common spirit. Commencing with a panel and Q&A, the event will include an interactive art workshop named ‘Lemon Finger Workshop’ that places the participant in the role of creator, constructing their very own personalized artwork to gain a vivid experience about how the new generation of artists and designers incorporate humor within their works. Visit http://lemonfinger.eventbrite.com/ if you want to join the workshop.

Schedule:
5:00 pm – 5:45 pm Panel Discussion
5:45 pm – 6:00 pm Q&A

Workshop Part I : About Finger

instructor: Yi ZHOU, founder of LittleE Studio
Yi is known for her ‘Body Memory’ project which proposes that not only brain holds memories but human body as well retains physical memories. She expanded the concept through duplicate models of finger, ear, nose etc., which body parts are sent to people who associate with or have special memory of that it. In the workshop, she will introduce her DIY Kit called ‘Make Your Own Finger’ for the 1st portion of the workshop. She will guide participants through the process of making their own unique, duplicate finger on-site. The finger will also be used in the 2nd part of the workshop.

Workshop Part II: About Lemon

instructor: HU Naishu, founder of Avent Studio
Hu uses “play” as a method to measure the body and to explore the dramatic relationship of people and food with an demonic perspective. Meanwhile, she devotes her typical humorous aspect to presence of art, creating the theatrically interactive experience. Following 1st portion of the workshop, Hu will inspire the students to think of the movement of fingers to create art works with food, with "lemon" as the main medium. The art works will compose unique scenario with the DIY "fingers".
